what is Aikido
Aikido is a Japanese martial art that was developed by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). The roots of this art lie in the tradition of Bushido, the way of the warrior.
The techniques of the samurai in fighting with sword (Katana), lance (Yari), stick (Jo) and knife (Tanto), as well as the fighting techniques without weapons from jujutsu, were further developed into a pure form of defense.
However, it is not primarily about self-defense, but about self-reflection and development. As is the case with many Japanese arts – influenced by Zen philosophy.
Ai can be translated as neutralizing, harmonizing and bringing together.
Ki means something like energy or power and is analogous to the Chinese Chi.
Do is the way, taken from Zen in the sense of ‘the way is the goal’.
Unlike martial arts such as Judo or Karate, there is no competition in Aikido. Women and men of all ages and weight classes practice together with respect for the ability of the other person.
Our dojo is affiliated with Birankai, which unites the students of T. K. Chiba Sensei worldwide. He is one of the direct and close students of the founder O’Sensei Morihei Ueshiba.
Committed to traditional Aikido, T. K. Chiba Sensei places great value on the martial aspects of training in order to promote both mind and body.
